More than a walk
in the woods

Forest bathing — or Shinrin-yoku — is the practice of slow, mindful immersion in nature. Unlike hiking, there's no destination. You simply arrive, breathe, and let the forest do its work.

At Root to Rebalance, every session is led by me personally, a board-certified physician with over 20 years of clinical experience. Where medical knowledge meets the restorative power of the forest.

01

Nervous system reset

Activates the parasympathetic system, reducing cortisol levels and heart rate for lasting calm.

02

Mood & clarity

Phytoncides released by trees support immune function and improve mental focus and emotional regulation.

03

Rooted presence

Sensory-led invitations slow the mind and bring you fully into the present moment.

Dr. Meeta Patel

An ER physician who has seen what stress does to the body and what nature can restore

I'm a Board Certified Emergency Medicine physician actively practicing medicine, with over 20 years of experience in trauma centers, rural critical access hospitals, and frontline pandemic care. Those years spent watching what chronic stress does to the human body, is what led me here, and where I discovered the value of prevention, restoration, and connection through nature.

Training as a certified nature as medicine practitioner and forest therapy guide brought together two areas I had long understood separately: the science of the stress response and the profound restorative power of time in nature. Root to Rebalance was built on the belief that healing happens beyond the clinical setting.

  • Nature as Medicine Practitioner and Forest Therapy Guide certification in progress, completing November 2026
  • Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician · Residency, University of Texas / Memorial Hermann Hospital, Houston · Currently practicing as an ER physician in San Francisco, CA
  • Former Medical Director, rural critical access hospital
  • Volunteer physician and Medical Director for international nonprofits in Uganda, Philippines, Dominican Republic, India, and Mexico

Drawn to the Land

In addition to emergency medicine and forest bathing, I am drawn to winemaking. Through harvest work and time in local vineyards, I've learned the value of patience, presence, and working in partnership with natural rhythms. In both the vineyard and the forest, I am reminded that growth and transformation unfold in their own time. It's the same mindset I bring to every forest bathing experience.

What you might be wondering

Forest bathing is a gentle, science-informed practice. Here are answers to the questions most people have before their first session.

Still have questions?
Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) is a guided practice of slow, mindful immersion in a natural environment. This service is distinct in that it is physician-led, integrating evidence-informed understanding of stress physiology, nervous system regulation, and restorative care with the therapeutic qualities of nature.
While anyone can walk in nature, a trained guide helps you experience it more intentionally. Through carefully crafted sensory invitations, a certified forest therapy guide helps you slow down, deepen your awareness, and notice aspects of the natural world that are often overlooked.

Much like yoga, you can practice on your own. A skilled teacher, however, can help you access a depth of experience that may be difficult to reach without guidance. Similarly a certified forest therapy guide creates the conditions for a richer and more meaningful experience, without providing therapy, diagnosis, or treatment.

In forest therapy, the forest is considered the healer. The guide's role is simply to open the door.
Medical training informs how sessions are structured, paced, and guided with attention to safety and the mind-body connection. While this is not medical treatment, it is a wellness service thoughtfully informed by clinical knowledge and experience.
Participants commonly report reduced stress, improved mood, mental clarity, and a greater sense of calm and grounding. Physiological benefits may include slower breathing, reduced tension, and enhanced relaxation.
Sessions involve minimal physical exertion. Walking is slow and optional, with frequent pauses. The experience is designed to be accessible rather than physically demanding.
This is a wellness service, not a substitute for medical care, diagnosis, or treatment. It is intended to complement, not replace, ongoing medical or therapeutic care.
